Hotel Meissl & Schadn

Hotel Meissl & Schadn (ook geschreven door Meißl & Schadn) was een bekend hotel op Neuer Markt 2 (de achterkant bevindt zich op Kärntner Straße 16) in het 1e district van Innere Stadt in Wenen. De oorsprong van het bedrijf gaat terug tot het midden van de 17e eeuw. Destijds droeg het de naam “Zum blaue Hirsch”. In 1852 verwierf het de Weense restaurantcoöperatie (“door middel van de burgerlijke wijn- en restauranteigenaren van Wenen”), die daar tot 1892 haar zetel had.

Het hotel werd in 1894-1896 herbouwd door Karl Hofmeier (1858-1934) in neogotisch-Germaanse stijl en verving het oude gebouw. De façade tegenover de Kärntner Straße was versierd met mozaïeken door Eduard Veith, die de vijf delen van de wereld vertegenwoordigde. Het bijgevoegde hotel-restaurant omschreef tijdgenoten als “het mekka van de vleeseters”. Bekende gast in het hotel was de componist Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) die hier waarschijnlijk in 1865, 1869 en 1896 verbleef.

Het gebouw brandde in 1945 af tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De zijde van de Kärntner Straße met het nog bestaande mozaïek werd zwaarder beschadigd dan de zijde van de Neuer Markt, maar niet gesloopt, maar gemoderniseerd. De Neuer Markt-zijde werd vervangen door het nieuwe Europa Hotel.

Mozaïek Restaurant Meissl & Schadn, Kartnerstrasse nr. 16 (achterkant van het hotel). Sinds 27 september 2017 is er weer een restaurant met dezelfde naam, dat is geopend op Schubertring 12.
