Marbun traditional name
The family name Marbun is a traditional clan name (marga) of the Batak Toba people in North Sumatra, Indonesia. According to Batak tradition, the clan descends from an ancestor named Toga Marbun, who was a son of Raja Naipospos. The traditional homeland of the Marbun clan is around Bakkara, near Lake Toba. These origins are based mainly on family traditions and genealogies rather than fully documented historical records.
The Marbun clan has three main branches: Lumbanbatu, Banjarnahor and Lumbangaol. In Batak culture, the marga is important for family identity, understanding relationships and marriage customs. Over time, members of the Marbun clan moved to other parts of Indonesia, including cities such as Medan and Jakarta. To research a particular Marbun family, it is useful to identify its oldest known ancestors, original village and branch of the clan.
Pangaribuan traditional name
The Pangaribuan family name is one of the traditional Batak Toba clan names (marga) from North Sumatra, Indonesia. The clan is traditionally linked to Laguboti, near Lake Toba, and traces its ancestry to Toga Raja Pangaribuan, who is regarded as the seventh generation descended from Si Raja Batak. In Batak culture, a marga represents a shared ancestral lineage and plays an important role in family identity, marriage customs, and genealogy.
The Pangaribuan clan belongs to the Sipaettua branch and has several well-known family settlements, including Sitoluama, Sidulang, Pintubosi, Gasaribu, Ujung Tanduk, and Pardinggaran. Today, Pangaribuan families live throughout Indonesia and abroad while maintaining their Batak traditions through family organizations and genealogical records (tarombo).
