Modules

PPE (Power and Propulsion Element)

  • Function: The first of two modules for the lunar Gateway that will orbit the Moon and be visited by Orion. Integrated with HALO.
  • Contractor: Maxar.
  • Launch vehicle: Falcon Heavy, SLS Block 1B.
  • Launch planning: 11-2024.

HALO (Habitat and Logistics Outpost)

  • Function: The first of two module for the lunar Gateway that will orbit the Moon and be visited by Orion. Integrated with PPE.
  • Contractor: Northrop Grumman.
  • Launch vehicle: Falcon Heavy, SLS Block 1B.
  • Launch planning: 11-2024.

I-HAB (Habitat)

  • Function: Habitat for astronauts when they visit the Gateway.
  • Contractor: ESA.
  • Launch vehicle: Falcon Heavy, SLS Block 1B.
  • Launch planning: 2026 (Artemis IV).

ESPRIT-ERM (European System Providing Refueling, Infrastructure and Telecomunications)

  • Function: Refueling, Infrastructure and Telecomunications
  • Contractor: ESA.
  • Launch vehicle: Falcon Heavy, SLS Block 1B.
  • Launch planning: 2027.

Airlock

  • Function: Enables docking EVA’s (Extravehicular Activities), science module.
  • Contractor: ?
  • Launch vehicle: Falcon Heavy, SLS Block 1B.
  • Launch planning: 2028 (Artemis VI).

The Lunar Gateway, or simply Gateway, is the first planned extraterrestrial space station in lunar orbit intended to serve as a solar-powered communication hub, science laboratory, and short-term habitation module for government-agency astronauts, as well as a holding area for rovers and other robots. It is a multinational collaborative project involving four of the International Space Station partner agencies: NASA, European Space Agency (ESA), Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), and Canadian Space Agency (CSA). It is planned to be both the first space station beyond low Earth orbit and the first space station to orbit the Moon.
