- In 1829 dirigeerde de Duitse componist Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-1847) voor een zeer enthousiast publiek de Matthäus-Passion van Bach. Het werd het begin van een Bach-renaissance.
- De zeer actieve Mendelssohn componeerde zelf de oratoria Paulus en Elijah (Elias). De componist legde zijn hart en ziel in Elijah. Het zou zijn laatste grote werk worden. In 1846 ging Elijah in het Engelse Birmingham in première. Mendelssohn werd door het vele reizen, dirigeren, concerteren en lesgeven geplaagd door hevige hoofdpijnen. Toen zijn zus Fanny plotseling overleed, raakte hij totaal ontmoedigd om door te werken. Hij overleed op slechts achtendertigjarige leeftijd aan een beroerte.
- Elijah leefde in de negende eeuw voor Christus en was net als Mozes, Jesaja en Jeremia een profeet. Zijn verhaal wordt vertelt in het eerste boek der Koningen van het Oude Testament. Elijah wordt afgeschilderd als bestrijder van de goddeloosheid. Hij trekt ten strijde tegen de goddeloze volgelingen van natuurgod Baal, die gewoonlijk natuurverschijnselen als de regen, wind, storm en bliksem aanbidden. Elijah verricht wonderen en doet zelfs de doden herleven. In de beeldende kunst komt hij veelvuldig voor. De schilder Rembrandt heeft Elijah eveneens als onderwerp gekozen. Elijahs tenhemelopneming (in een vurige wagen) komt voor op sarcofagen.
- Mendelssohns werk is geschreven voor vier zang solisten (bas / bariton, tenor, alt, sopraan), groot symfonie orkest (met maar liefst 3 trombones en ophicleïde (19e eeuws koperen blaasinstrument met kleppen), orgel en uitgebreid koor. Er bestaat zowel een Duitstalige als Engelse uitvoering. Eerder, in 1836, schreef Mendelssohn het oratorium Paulus.
